making website mobile friendly

Hello,  I am trying to make my website mobile friendly.  I went to website preferences and checked the box, however, now it just makes my website blank.  Also, when I go to switch to mobile editor, an error box appears and it says my directory is not writable.  I am stuck.  Please help!
